When twin sisters Rose and Bel Enright enroll in The Odell School, a prestigious New Hampshire boarding school, it seems like the opportunity of a lifetime. But the sisters could not be more different. The school brings out a rivalry between them that few ever knew existed. And the school itself has a dark underbelly: of privileged kids running unchecked and uninhibited; of rituals and traditions that are more sinister than they seem; of wealth and entitlement that can only lead to disaster.
For Sarah Donovan, wife of an ambitious teacher who is determined to rise through the ranks, Odell also seems like the best thing that could happen to their small family. But how well does she really know her husband? What lengths will he go to to achieve his goals? And when one dark night ends in murder, who is guilty, who knows the truth, and who has been in on it all along? SHE WAS THE QUIET ONE. Because murderers are almost never who you expect.
Sometime in July of 2017, I had the opportunity to read and review a book by Michele Campbell entitled It’s Always the Husband (see review HERE). While I had never heard of this author, the “back cover” of the book had a very interesting story. I loved the book and gladly gave it 4.5 stars, so when I saw Michele Campbell had a new book out, I jumped at the opportunity! Today’s post is about her new book, She Was the Quiet One.
First I will say this – this book starts out in a really cool way – at the beginning of the story, we have Rose and Bel Enright, orphaned fraternal twins who have recently been enrolled in an exclusive boarding school. Their father died when they were young and then their mother passed away when they were teenagers. When their mother died, they then went to their their wealthy paternal grandmother’s massive home home in Connecticut to live. Their grandmother quickly bought both girls all new clothes and promptly sent them to Odell prep school where all of her family had attended for generations.
The twins have night and day personalities and started butting heads with each other the moment they arrived at prep school. Bel tended to be the more popular twin and Rose was very focused on her grades and her classes. Rose tried to look out for Bel, but Bel was busy hanging out with the wrong crowd.
Readers know that one of the twins has been murdered, but they don’t know which one, why, or by whom. That really gets us started out full of questions. The reader has to unravel the story as they go along with the characters of the story based upon police interviews and a narrative with multiple points of view.
The book is masterfully chalked full of suspense. There are tons of secrets, twists and turns throughout this story, and the alternating points of view keep everything neatly wrapped until the very end, which drives readers to turn page after page until they get it. Sometimes I felt like I knew the answers and sometimes I realized I was completely wrong! Ms. Campbell has provided readers with an awesome psychological thriller you don’t want to miss!
Michele Campbell is a graduate of Harvard College and Stanford Law School and a former federal prosecutor in New York City who specialized in international narcotics and gang cases. A while back, she said goodbye to her big-city legal career and moved with her husband and two children to an idyllic New England college town a lot like Belle River in IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND. Since then, she has spent her time teaching criminal and constitutional law and writing novels.
Since then, she has spent her time teaching criminal and constitutional law and writing novels. She has had many close female friends, a few frenemies, and only one husband, who – to the best of her knowledge – has never tried to kill her.
Michele currently lives in New Hampshire.
