Shark Tale: 20th Anniversary- Will Smith, Jack Black, Robert DeNiro, Renee Zellweger, Angelina Jolie
Quick Take: I’m always surprised this didn’t become a franchise. After all, there are two Nut Job movies. Gnomeo and Juliet got a sequel. The Boss Baby had a sequel. How this movie managed to evade becoming a franchise likely has to do with the expense and popularity of the voice cast. Will Smith, jack Black, Renee Zellweger, Robert DeNiro, Angelina Jolie, and Martin Scorsese. do you realize that out of the entire main voice cast I just listed, only one of them is not an Oscar winner? That is amazing.
I’m not sure if Shark Tale is standing the test of time, because it would involve parents taking the time to show their kids an older film. I look at kids coming around nowadays, and I think about how much did I really watch from before I was born. Of course, the Disney animated films, and holiday classics. Animation was being kept mostly by Disney on the feature side, so it is hard to tell with all the available animation for kids now, how much older material they watch. But, this story of a little fish who wants to rise up, and a shark that doesn’t want to kill, did follow in Finding Nemo’s footsteps, and still found an audience. This is probably underrated, and still has some kind of an audience.
I’ve seen this a few times, and watching it again with audio description, I did think it did a nice job of supporting the project as I remember it. For more, check out my video.
