September Jobs in the Garden

By Alip @alisonpikeGD

I know you don’t want to hear it but this is the month when summer starts to slip away and autumn will soon be upon us.  The change in seasons is actually something I really love, I suppose it makes you appreciate when things are in full flow because you know it won’t last so you savour the moment.  Even though the nights are beginning to draw in and there is that nip in the air in the mornings there is still plenty to do in the garden.

  1. Prune rambling roses.
  2. Lift Dahlia tubers once they have finished flowering and store them in dry compost in a cool, frost free place.
  3. Sow sweetpeas now so that you have strong bushy plants for next year.
  4. Lift and divide congested clumps of perennials that have finished doing their thing.  They will appreciate the time to settle back in before the winter arrives.
  5. Lift Gladioli corms and store them in your shed or garage.
  6. Clear away fading bedding plants.
  7. Continue to save seeds that are still ripening.
  8. Take rose cuttings.
  9. Get the rake out and start tidying up the falling leaves.  Collect them and leave them to break down into leaf mulch.
  10. Now is a good time to start planting out new purchases.  The soil is nice and warm and they have time to settle in before winter.
