Self- Storage Vs Portable Storage Containers

Whether you are relocating or need to handle overflow from your home or office, you have two intriguing storage options: self-storage and portable storage. Self-storage generally refers to a storage unit in a fixed location. You travel there to store items as well as retrieve them. Portable storage is different in that the storage unit is brought to you. When you are done storing and retrieving items, the service provider picks up the unit and stores it at a facility until you need it again. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, so let us examine those in closer detail.

Advantages of Self-Storage

Self-storage offers perhaps the widest range of square footage as well as configurations. If you want a closet-sized storage space, for instance, self-storage may be your only option. These units are almost always climate-controlled, which may matter depending on what you store. Access may be more convenient as well. You can spend just a half hour this week at your unit whereas such a little amount of time may not make it practical to schedule your portable storage container.

Disadvantages of Self-Storage

Self-storage tends not to be as cost-effective as portable solutions because of more overhead, and it can be a lot more expensive depending on where you live and how far you have to drive. The travelling is an added hassle as well. Loading and unloading self-storage just takes more time. There is the added hassle that you essentially have to load and unload everything twice.

Advantages of Portable Storage Containers

These containers are delivered to your home and picked up on your schedule. While such containers may not match the sheer variety of fixed storage units, they are available in a wide range of sizes. Depending on your situation, you can even keep the container on your property full time. Portable storage containers do include many niceties, including lighting and dollies, and if climate control is important to you, you can get that as well.

Disadvantages of Portable Storage Containers

While this varies between jurisdictions, perhaps the biggest disadvantage of portable storage is that your local government may require a right of way permit or a similar license. Such permits are often temporary, which means that you have to renew the license periodically. If that involves a public servant coming out to your property, that can certainly interfere with your schedule and make portable less convenient.

Both self-storage and portable storage are viable options, and which is better for you depends on your particular needs. Portable storage containers do tend to provide more flexibility particularly if you are relocating. If you are still unsure and need to make a decision, portable is a strong choice.
