Selecting the perfect vase
When you receive a bouquet of flowers or even create one yourself, there is no doubt about the important role your vase will play. The right vase will help highlight the beauty of the bouquet without stealing the spotlight. The right vase will also offer sufficient support for those stems and complement the décor in the room.
Before you select a vase, you need to decide where you plan on displaying the flowers. If the flowers are bold and bright in colour, you may want to keep the vase as simple as possible. On the other hand, if the flowers are simple and elegant, you can use a more detailed vase. If you use a detailed vase to hold a bright bouquet, it will be too overwhelming since the two will compete for attention.
By far the safest bet of all is a clear glass vase. This is because they lack colour and will suit any environment. You don't have to worry about the vase not suiting the colour scheme or theme of the bouquet. It is the perfect holder when you do not want your flowers to be overshadowed. If you like, you can add vase fillers. That said, vase fillers need to suit the flowers, the décor in your room, and usually the season too. Vase fillers made from artificial materials (as opposed to fresh), will last longer and they will not affect the quality of the water.
If you want to display a tall arrangement of long-stemmed flowers such as gladioli, delphiniums, or lilies, you need to make sure that the vase is also tall enough. If the vase is too short, your arrangement will be top heavy and can easily fall over. Not to mention the fact that it will look rather odd. Short-stemmed flowers should be displayed in shorter vases. If you place them in a taller vase so that only the flower heads are sticking out, it will look as though the flowers are swimming, or possibly drowning, in the vase.
Lastly, don't forget to think outside the box when it comes to vases. Yes, there are plenty of vases available at your local florist and various stores. However, you also have a large selection of household items that can serve the purpose of a vase. Jars, tins, and watering cans are three of the most popular options. They can be left as they are or, if you don't like the way they look, they can be covered and decorated according to your needs.
