Seed Bombs for Cats

By Whatyousow

I’m super excited this week to launch “Seed Bombs for cats” a garden gift collaboration with guerrilla gardener Josie Jeffery of Seedfreedom, a small business that aims to educate and inspire people to grow plants through the use of seed bombs.

A seed bomb is a small ball of clay, compost and seeds that can be launched into any space to create a patch of garden. Each seed bomb contains everything needed for the seeds to grow: compost and clay provide protection and nutrition to give the seedlings a good start in life plus chilli powder is added to keep hungry ants at bay.

Our Cat-friendly treats contain catnip and can be used in the garden, in a pot or thrown onto wasteland for local cats to enjoy.

Head over to What You Sow to buy your Seed bombs for cats!

I’m delighted to have worked with Josie on this project; we had a lot of fun coming up with the design and contents of the gift bag and excitedly talking about seeds together.

Over the past few years I have met a lot of incredibly lovely, passionate gardening geeks, but I have to tell you that Josie is honestly the biggest seed nerd I have ever come across. She’s a fantastic storyteller with a vast collection of tales about sowing, growing and saving seeds, with each story leading off on a number of delightful tangents. You get the sense that there’s little she doesn’t know or couldn’t find out about seeds.

She’s the keeper of the Mini’llennium Seed Bank, a tiny case packed with vials of seeds and I was lucky enough to spend the day with her in the ideas lab of TEDxBrighton a few weeks ago where she was exhibiting her seed bank and helping people create their own seed bombs. I took dozens of pictures which I hope give you a sense of the beauty and diversity of native seeds.

So back to our collaboration…Inside each gift bag are 6 seed bombs packed with catnip seeds, peat free compost and clay, 2 seed markers to remember where you’ve sown them, a water sprinkler to convert your water bottle into a watering can and full instructions on how to use your seed bombs.

Each seed bomb is lovingly made, rolled and wrapped by hand by Josie in her Lab in Brighton and the packaging is adorned with a glorious image by my fave illustrator Debbie Hill, whose work you’ll recognize from the What You Sow logo.

Seed Bombs for Cats are available to buy now at What You Sow where you’ll also find all three of Josie’s books Seedbombs, Seedswap and Good Companions, perfect pressies for the cat lovers and seed nerds in your life.
