Scarecrow's Garden Journal Notes: April 2014:

By Scarecrow
Progress is being made on the garden makeover. Areas cleared, beds dismantled, fences down, stash sorted, markers in for slab for my new shed that will hold the chook food and garden tools and gear for the Orchard. All this occurs under the watchful eyes of the Wizard Doc, his pet Dragon and Witchy Scarecrow.
With each cleared area appearing new ideas of what to put where are emerging...in other words we are not working to any plan with this!!!!

Temperatures this month:

Lowest Min 3.9C
Highest Min 17C
Lowest Max 13.7C
Highest Max 33.4C
84.5mm Rainfall
Rain Year To Date: 133.5mm (Average YTD: 88mm)
Comparison with other years: April average is 22.6mm:
2014 84.5mm
2013 26.5mm
2012  3mm
2011  3mm
2010 18mm

Weather Highlights?
April brought a warm but wet start to Autumn here in Scarecrow's Garden. By the end of the month it was clear that winter was on it's way with overnight temperatures dropping. We have had the wettest April in many years and has brought us well over the average for year to date but I wonder if this trend will continue...
Harvest Tally:
Doesn't include Greens fed to the chooks on a daily basis or herbs picked for use in the kitchen for cooking or tea making. For Salads, Juice and Stirfries I have been picking Kale, Lebanese Cress, Lettuce, Spring Onions, Parsley, Sorrel and Sweet Potato Leaves which are not always weighed.
Beetroot 60g
Capsicum Sweet Paprika 285g
Cucumber Suyo Long  210g
Kale 1475g
Onions 300g
Total Veg Harvest for April 2.3Kgs
Apples Golden Delicious 26593g
Peaches 6290g
Total Fruit Harvest for April 32.9Kg

Total Eggs for April:
  1 egg.
1 From the 1 Farmyard Feral
0 From the 3 Faverolles

As you see by the "Total Eggs for April" the chooks have gone pretty dry in the egg producing department of late...I hope the new little girls will help out soon although that's not likely for a while yet! They are making great little mulch producers scratching around in their straw yard and they can demolish a bunch of Kale in a few minutes!

For those who may have missed this on Facebook...a friendly reminder to make sure you plant your Garlic bulbs POINTY side UP...I'm blaming the birds who scratched the mulch after I planted these out for this one!!
