Saturday Confession: Street on My Treat

By Lindsayleighbentley @lindsayLbentley

After Henry’s baseball game today we went to the Farmer’s Market.  We picked up some beautiful swiss chard (Henry’s favorite green) and some delicious heirloom tomatoes from two of my favorite farmers.

We also snagged the last of the orange-zest cinnamon rolls from Lucy.  Henry wanted one and despite the cake debacle of Thursday night, I obliged him. See, the last thing he needed was sugar.  I made a chocolate cake for my cousin’s birthday, and Henry had a piece at 7:30.  At 11 pm I went in to his room to investigate the banging noises to discover him, hyper as hell, jumping on the bed and sing-shouting “I’m not tired at all!!!”

See, there is a downside to not letting your kids regularly have sugar.

Anyhow, even with this memory in the back of my head there was a stronger voice telling me that I really wanted that delicious roll, so I agreed to share it with him.

For those of you who don’t know, sharing with a 4 year old is a very loose concept.  I thought we would wait until we got home and cut it in half, you know, in a civilized manner.  But before I knew it he’d sucked the icing off the top and eaten the best, gooey center…leaving me with the outer crusty part.

Then, he accidentally dropped it.  Right there on the asphalt parking lot-turned market.  I stood there and stared at it for a minute, as I always do these days. See, I’m at the point in my pregnancy that bending over takes so much effort that any time I drop something I pause and stare it down for a good 30 seconds, evaluating just how much I want whatever it is.

Mind-willing it to jump back to a reasonable height.

Often, I’ll just wait until there are 10 valuable items on the floor and crawl around, huffing and puffing to collect them all in one fell-swoop.

However, today, my belly didn’t deter me.

The judging eyes of others were invisible to me.

The possibility of flashing crack to the entire market in pursuit of a dirty danish couldn’t stop me.

With a heave-and a ho and an audible grunt I bent over and picked that sucker up.  Picked off the bits of ground…yes, there was street on my treat, and ate it.

And it was delicious…

Had I taken the time to capture it in all of it’s mangled glory in a picture you would be judging me all the more.

Whatever.  I don’t even care.  It tasted fantastic.

live well. be well.
