Sassyhiya – ‘Take You Somewhere’ Album Review

With influences ranging from the Breeders and Broadcast to Dolly Parton and ‘Kristen Stewart’ already on its way to becoming a queer anthem, Sassyhiya’s debut record ‘Take You Somewhere’ promises to be a glorious celebration of modern life.

The wonky, woozy pop melodies of opener ‘Boat Called Predator’ bring back memories of indie legends Bearsuit, while ‘I Had a Thought’ has a gorgeous guitar hook that wouldn’t be out of place on a Pavement record. Kristen Stewart is a beautiful ode to the talented star and is full of lust – ‘Sneakers and sport socks, making all the girls hot’ – while ‘Think You and Goodbye’ is a slice of art pop that finds the band trying to move on from an intense love: ‘I think it’s best that you return home. Immediately please’.

‘Crayon Potato’ is a celebration of guitarist Kathy Wright and bassist Helen Skinner’s pet cat, while ‘Take You Somewhere’ is a swooning and sincere love song: ‘I could take you somewhere’. ‘Let’s See What We Can Find’ finds the listener being invited on a mystery trip – complete with ’60s vibes – before ‘On Our Way’ moves the album in a more angular direction, complete with an instruction nobody can turn down: ‘Time for tea’.

The closing ‘You Can Give It (But You Can’t Take It)’ has a defiance running through it that any introvert can relate to: ‘Talking down to me, you wind me up’. Let Sassyhiya take you on this fun-filled journey…
