Last week saw new entrants in Samsung’s line of Galaxy Tab devices. On 1st of July, 2014, Samsung unveiled its Galaxy Tab S in new Delhi. This brand new tablet device by Samsung claims to be the thinnest and lightest tablet device with Super AMOLED display.
Talking about the launch of Tab S, Mr. Asim Warsi, VP, Mobile & IT, Samsung India said, “We are excited to unveil the new Galaxy Tab S offering a dazzling display, exquisite slim design and finest performance to our Indian consumers. The technological marvel is thinnest, lightest and is equipped with Super AMOLED touchscreen. With innovation at the core of our mission to lead the tablet segment, launch of Galaxy Tab S will further propel us in this growing category and facilitate ground-breaking success.”
So here are some of the highlights of Samsung Galaxy Tab S:
Galaxy Tab S is quite sleek and light weight. It is available in two display size variants. These are 8.4 inch and 10.5 inch. Both have the thickness of 6.6 mm. The 10.5 inch tab weighs 467g and the 8.4 inch tab weighs 298g. The tabs are available in Titanium Bronze and Dazzling White colors.
The Galaxy Tab S has the processing power of Exynos 5 Octa-core. It has Android Kit-Kat operating system. It has impressive 3GB RAM. Both the tabs come with 16 GB of internal memory, expandable upto 128 GB. The Galaxy tab S is equipped with 8 MP rear camera capable of full HD video recording. It also has 2.1 MP HD front camera.
In terms of display, the Galaxy Tab S has WQXGA (2560×1600, 16:10) Super AMOLED display which promises to deliver more than 90% of Adobe RGB color coverage, that is, capability of showing more colours. It also promises to deliver 100,000:1 contrast ratio, enhancing the image quality by delivering richer contrast between blacks and whites
What enhances the display even further is the technology called Adaptive Display which promises better visual experience, no matter what the surrounding. It promises convenient and comfortable viewing whether in a dark room, or outdoors in sunlight. The Adaptive Display automatically adjusts the gamma, saturation and sharpness of the images based upon the content and application being viewed, where it is viewed, and in what light.
The tab also has two pre-set viewing modes - AMOLED Cinema and AMOLED Photo that allow users to adjust the display setting for videos and photos separately.
Tab S has built-in calling capability, and it can also be used to make and receive calls from the compatible phone (currently only Galaxy S5) using the call forwarding feature through SideSync 3.0. This feature can enable the user to make and receive call using their phone, even while away from their phone. However, as of now, S5 is the only compatible phone that can be used with this feature.
As for the tab’s multi-tasking capabilities, it is equipped to enable the users to use different apps together, like browse the net, watch videos, even while making calls.
What I especially liked about Tab S is its Multi User Mode. This allows upto 8 users to create their own separate and secure profiles on the tab, with their own customized display and icon placements and settings. These profiles can be secured using the inbuilt Fingerprint Scanner.
Tab S also has a Kids Mode that has been designed to keep children entertained, while at the same time ensuring that they don’t accidentally mess with the content or setting of the device, or access content not suitable for them.
Tab S also has the Ultra-Power Saving Mode. This mode can come in handy in making the battery last longer for use of the most essential functions.
The users of Galaxy Tab S can also avail of various Galaxy Gifts. These include 100 free HD movies from MyPlex, free subscription for three months of 21 leading Indian magazines, free access for three months to over 15,000 Marvel Comics, one free ebook from Kindle for Samsung through Samsung Book Deals. Other gifts are also available on Google Play, especially for Galaxy tab S users, through the “My Library” widget.
In terms of accessories, the Galaxy Tab users can buy the Book Cover that can be adjusted into three different display angles, as per the user’s convenience and need. A Simple Cover is also available which is thinner and more lightweight than the Book Cover, but with the same protective structure.
The pre-booking of Galaxy Tab S is now open across India. As per a special offer, all the customers who pre-book Tab S between 1st to 11th July at the Samsung India E-Store or at specified preview outlets stand to receive a free book cover accessory.
Tab S will start being available in stores across India by mid July 2014 with the Market Operating Price (MOP) of INR. 37,800/- for 8.4 inch & INR. 44,800/- for 10.5 inch variant.
