Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Everything You Need to Know

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Everything you need to know. With the release of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung introduced the most recent iteration of its folding smartphones in August. However, the Korean behemoth isn’t taking any chances, as speculation regarding the Z Fold 5’s replacement is already beginning to circulate.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: Everything you need to know:

The first thing is that we believe we already know how it will seem, and not much has changed. Renders of the phone, which were shared with the website SmartPrix by the often dependable OnLeaks, show a style that is very similar to that of earlier models:

Here is all the information we currently have about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5.

When will the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 be released?

Although Samsung hasn’t yet announced a launch date, there is mounting evidence that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will go on sale in late July.

Samsung is considering releasing the foldable in July, according to reports from SamMobile, The Elec, and Tech_Reve. More lately, though, both the Korean website Chosun and leaker Max Jambor have been more specific, betting on an Unpacked event.

That’s a little earlier than anticipated, maybe in response to Google’s recent unveiling of Pixel Fold competition, but it’s about in line with Samsung’s timeline for its foldable in the late summer. The previous generations arrived at the following dates:

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold: September 2019
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2: September 2020
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: August 2021
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: August 2022

We anticipate the Z Fold 5 to be presented alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Watch 6, and Galaxy Tab S9. This is similar to the presentation from last year.

How much will the Galaxy Z Fold 5 cost?

When Samsung does update the Fold catalog, you can be sure it won’t be cheap because folding phones continue to fall within the category of high-end electronics. Here is how the last two generations stacked up in terms of costs to give you an idea:

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4:

  • 256GB: $1,799/£1,649/€1,799
  • 512GB: $2,009/£1,769/€1,919
  • 1TB: $2,249/£2,019/€2,159

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3:

  • 256GB: $1,799/£1,599/€1,799
  • 512GB: $1,899/£1,699/€1,899

As you can see, costs varied little between models, but they generally increased slightly. It appears unlikely that you’ll see much of a reduction in cost when the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is released, and if anything, prices could rise a little bit more. This is due to the continued global inflation.

What about the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 specs and features?

Although the new Fold won’t be here for a time, there have been some rumors about what Samsung will add in the update starting to circulate.

The flash has been shifted from the bottom to the side, and the camera island appears to protrude from the phone a little more, but other than that, the overall design is rather similar.
At our first glance at a potential phone protective cover, posted by Ice Universe, we can see a similar shape:

Colors:

Ross Young, a display industry expert, has commented on the phone’s color options, claiming that it will debut in Beige, Black, and Light Blue. However, he points out that these are unlikely to be the official names, and that the phone should debut alongside other colours intended to ship in lower volumes and likely only available through the Samsung store.

The Z Fold 5 will, according to Ice, once again have IPX8 water resistance, the same rating as the Fold 4. That indicates a high level of waterproofing but no formal dust protection.

S pen:

One significant design concern is whether this year will finally see Samsung give the S Pen stylus its own place inside the phone. According to The Elec, the company reportedly tried and failed to incorporate this into the Z Fold 4’s design. In a meeting with component suppliers, Samsung reportedly stated that a dedicated S Pen slot is one of the features needed to boost the popularity of its foldable, along with thinner and lighter designs and better camera performance.

However, it doesn’t seem like this is the year for a shift. The images from OnLeaks show no indication of an S Pen slot, while Korea’s ETNews claims that the S Pen won’t fit into the phone. Although Samsung R&D was working on it, space considerations eventually seem to have prevailed, so you’ll still need to hold onto your S Pen by yourself.

Design:

Perhaps this is a result of Samsung giving the phone’s compact design a top priority. According to OnLeaks, the phone will measure 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.3mm when unfolded and 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.5mm when closed. Although he puts the phone somewhat slimmer at 6.1mm unfurled and 13.4mm folded, Ice Universe agrees almost exactly. It will also be lighter than it was the previous year, says Ice.

In any case, it gives the phone a similar overall size to the Z Fold 4 while being noticeably slimmer when closed, supporting reports made by both Ice Universe and the Korean website Naver that Samsung is switching to a waterdrop-style hinge that will finally allow the foldable to close completely.

Display:

The technology that rivals now frequently employ bends the display into the shape of a curved droplet when it folds, which has two benefits: it enables displays to entirely close when folded with no gap between, and it minimizes the size of the crease when the screen is flat. This has been Z Fold’s primary competitive disadvantage for the past year or so, so Samsung’s decision would help the company demonstrate that it still got the lead in foldable.

Leaker yeux1122 released this image of the prototype (right) next to an existing Z Fold 4 to support his allegation that Samsung brought a prototype foldable with a waterdrop hinge to CES 2023. This should not be interpreted as a clear indication of the Z Fold 5’s design, but it does imply that Samsung may be able to make a foldable that is both lighter and thinner, in addition to the advantages for the display, if it decides to use the new hinge.

Speaking of the displays, with the phone’s overall size remaining the same, Ice Universe predicts that the 6.2- and 7.6-inch sizes will remain the same.

TheGalox_ says that the displays will be 120Hz AMOLEDs, as expected, but adds that they will be brighter than before and that the exterior display will employ Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protective layer. This information is included in a lengthy list of leaked specifications.

Processor:

The majority of leakers, notably The Elec and TheGalox_, claim that the phone will come with the same modified Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset present in the Galaxy S23 range. This means that, unlike last year, when the phone used the 8+ Gen 1, it won’t use the improved 8+ Gen 2. It appears to be fairly likely at this point since we’ve already seen what appears to be a Z Fold 5 appear on Geekbench using the 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy.

SamMobile claims that the phone will have exactly the same 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options as the one from the previous year, while TheGalox_ anticipates that it will come with 12GB RAM as standard – yet another unchanged feature.

Camera:

The Galaxy Z fold 5 is anticipated to maintain the device’s triple back camera setup, which will have a 50Mp main sensor (the Samsung ISOCELL GN3), a 12Mp ultrawide, and a 10Mp telephoto lens. Those are the same specifications as the Fold 4, though it’s possible that Samsung will make some minor changes.

The Elec at least confirms that the selfie camera will have a 12MP sensor, which is a modest upgrade from the Fold’s 10MP sensor.

Lastly, charging and batteries. Although the Fold 5’s battery size hasn’t been officially announced, its placement on China’s 3C certification website appears to indicate that it will continue to use the somewhat slow 25W charging speeds currently in use. As before, the phone will not come with a charger.
