The dream pop concocted by Watercolours floats just above the earth’s surface, nearly grazing the ground with its fleshy rhythms and sturdy electronics. Releasing an EP of incredible lightness at the end of last year, Watercolours is made up of one Chelsea Jade Metcalf, who has a hefty following in her home city of Auckland, New Zealand, leading her to gain opening slots for artists like Cat Power and Lorde. Listening to her EP, it’s not surprising at all that she’s made her name known at home, but it is surprising and also a bit frustrating that the US is still catching on. Sample her Portals EP and you might find yourself a bit frustrated, too — except it’s basically impossible to feel anything but weightless upon hearing it.
