Salma Hayek Has Her Own Awful Story About Harvey Weinstein

Not long after several women – including Ashley Judd – came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Harvey Weinstein, many additional high-profile actresses also spoke up with their own stories. One person absent from the conversation was Salma Hayek. Salma had made seven films with Miramax and its spin-off company Dimension. Most notable was the 2002 Frida Kahlo biopic, Frida. As it turns out, Salma had a lot to say about Harvey Weinstein. She was just saving it all up, and let it out she did.

Salma wrote an opinion piece published yesterday for The New York Times titled Harvey Weinstein Is My Monster Too. Salma begins by saying she was approached by reporters and her “dear friend” Ashley Judd to talk about an extremely shitty episode in her life involving Harvey Weinstein. Basically, you could call that episode: The Making of Frida. Which sounds like a fun making-of feature included in a 10th anniversary DVD copy, but was anything but.

Harvey gave Salma and Frida a lot of attention in the beginning. Salma wanted Frida to be great, and she thought Miramax had the kind of reputation that could make it happen. Salma says that along with starring in Frida and being a producer on the film, Harvey also demanded she sign a deal with Miramax for more movie roles. She did, because she thought it would turn her into a leading lady.

Salma says that Miramax picking up Frida was a dream come true. And then it quickly turned into a nightmare, as most things associated with Harvey Weinstein often do. Salma had to turn down the following requests allegedly made by Harvey: Taking a shower with him, letting him watch her take a shower, letting him give her a massage, letting a naked friend of his give her a massage, letting Harvey give her oral sex, and getting naked with another woman.

Harvey got pissed when she repeatedly turned him down and went after her, like telling her he had offered her Frida role to another actress and was going to send the movie directly to video. Salma also claims that Harvey threatened to kill her and said, “Don’t think I can’t.

Harvey reportedly didn’t stop there either. Salma claims he complained many times that she wasn’t sexy enough as Frida Kahlo. When she fought back, Salma says Harvey threatened to kill the film entirely unless there was a fully-nude lesbian sex scene included. And that’s why there’s a scene of a naked Salma getting busy with a woman in Frida. Salma hated filming it,and not because she didn’t want to fake-sex with a woman; she hated the idea of doing it solely because Harvey wanted it.

Despite Frida receiving six Academy Award nominations and winning two, Harvey never offered Salma the leading lady roles she expected to get.

I honestly didn’t think Harvey Weinstein’s reputation as an ego-mad pig could get any worse, and here were are with a claim about Harvey threatening to have an actress killed. Harvey was one hairless cat and a secret lair away from certified villain status. And I know that speaking up won’t erase Salma’s memories. But at the very least, maybe she can sit comfortably with the irony that the only thing Harvey successfully killed was his career.
