The appointment of Dr.Nandalal Weerasinghe as Central bank Governor is a commendable move, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday.

He said further however that the independence of the Central Bank should be established. He added that the country needs a grace period for all the loans that we have already have taken. We have to submit a mechanism to restructure the loan settlement.

He made these observations joining the Adjournment Debate moved by SLPP MP Dr.Ranjith Bandara on the IMF report on the Sri Lankan economic situation.

He said that the President and the Prime Minister should resign from their positions.

He added that the SJB will bring in a No Confidence Motion against the government if the President and Prime Minister do not resign from their offices. He also said that the Executive Presidency is not abolished.

He said that a new Budget should be proposed and provide relief to the public.

He said the SJB will not participate in an interim government if the government fails to meet their demands. He added that the government should heed to the demands of the people and resign.

He added that SJB cannot even think of joining an interim government because the government is rejected by the people. He added that there was no intention to join a party that has already lost their popularity.
