The boys of LA’s Saint Motel are back in town with the delightful new My Type EP. There is something so wonderfully alluring about their signature piano pop and rock combo that especially bursts through on this new collection of songs. Staying relatively silent since their 2012 debut, Voyeur, this new EP is a fresh breath of everything to love about Saint Motel. Horn heavy opener, “My Type”, boasts a steady groove, a wailing chorus and elements stolen from jazz and funk that all form together into a joyous exuberance. A lighter offering than the rest of the EP, “Ace in the Hole” ruminates about an unattainable girl in vocals that sound eerily like Michael Buble over a protruding bassline, whining guitar and fluttering percussion in the chorus. “Cold Cold Man” is the third jangly retro number that gets the closest to the group’s disco-esque roots with a beachy keyboard riff, gang vocals and a smidgen of tambourine that elevates the track to the most popular of the four. Rounding out the EP is the the piano rock number, “Midnight Movies”, with a sweet yet brash call and response and stellar solo sections of keys and guitar. Saint Motel have expertly crafted a set of uplifting, buoyant tracks that warrant a lot of smiling and probably some shoulder dancing.
