Sacred Life by The Cult.

I remember finding this song when I was in high school. I was watching a lot of River Phoenix movies at the time. It’s always interesting to listen to songs dedicated to late actors and musicians. I particularly liked this song because it mentioned more than one person, even though I didn’t know who Abbie Hoffman or Andrew Wood was at the time. Hoffman wasn’t even a musician or an actor, he was a political activist. He passed away from suicide in 1989 and Wood died from a drug overdose in 1990. Kurt Cobain is also mentioned in the lyrics.

Sacred Life was released on October 13, 1994 (a little less than a year after Phoenix died & only six months after Kurt’s death) from the album of the same name. Unfortunately, the album didn’t gain much attention and the song was only a single in Spain and the Netherlands.

The band had a brief hiatus from 1995 to 1999 but as of today, they are still together. Their most recent studio album was released in 2007.

Abbie Hoffman was so young, don’t you know your king is gone?
River Phoenix was so young, don’t you know your prince has gone?
Kurt Cobain was so young, sad to see this poet’s gone.
Andrew Wood was so young, it’s hard to feel this priest has gone.
