Rule Of Thirds

Hello friends, today we are going to discuss about Rule of thirds which is a basic and fundamental rule in both photography and in cinematography. Before going into the topic am repeating again..rules are ment to be broken..but learn the rule first and break it in that way it will give lot more balanced effect. So, please don't neglect these rules and am stressing again, if u have any plans to become DOP( Director Of Photography), or a cinematographer then these rules are must and also for wanna be directors. Okay, now coming back to the topic, These rules or other wise called as Framing and Composition rules. It's nothing but we are planning to frame a shot in a balanced manner or composing a shot in a interesting manner. Rule of thirds, Head room, nose room, chin etc., are the major topics to be discussed and i will be discussing about the other  topics related to rule of thirds in my upcoming posts.

Why To Use Rule Of Thirds

U can get a doubt why to use this rule and how it is helpful to me..well let me explain, Rule of thirds is nothing but we are dividing a snap(in photography) or while framing a shot we are dividing the whole frame into thirds i.e into nine equal parts both horizontally and vertically. When u do this, u will get four intersection points where we have to place the main subject or object. Again u can ask me why should i only place the subject or object in that point of intersection area only..okay, this is all because to get more balanced and interesting shot or a snap. Our human eye has a tendency to look some spots in a snap.. that when we look at some thing our eyes will firstly spot some areas in a snap those areas or nothing but the area present in between those intersection areas. So, if u can able to frame a shot using this rule u have done your best in framing the shot no need to look back for other things.

Possibilities Of Using Rule Of Thirds

Okay now when it comes to practicality i will tell u the possibilities of using this rule. Okay, u can ask me how can i divide a frame in to nine equal parts while u shoot. There's no other way other than to image those lines while u frame the shot. But, if u are an independent filmmaker and u have an aim to do lot number of short films then u can go for a good camcorder which contains an option called "Framing". What this option will do is, u can get those horizontal and vertical lines on your LCD screen of your camcorder so that u can place your image/object in the ares u want to frame. And, one more important note, there's no need to frame each and every scene and shot. Why we do is only to bring some balance in the scene nothing more than that. So, it's not a must for each and every shot. But, always remember when u frame a shot always think before twice or thrice about few things like:
What's the important thing u are going to frame in the particular shot. For example, u want to shoot a shot like a guy is standing on a sea shore looking at the sky in the evening( Sunset) time. When u plan to shoot this shot first of all u have to fix about the major thing about your subject first, of u feel that it about nature u want to project in the shot then your subject becomes sky. else, if u feel that u have to give stress on the guys feelings then your subject becomes that guy. So be very precise about what u are going to frame.
Framing a shot is only to bring beauty to your project. So, don't break the rule without purpose. Because u may loose the beauty of your shot. Always, remember breaking a rule should always bring some positiveness to your project it shouldn't be a topic for a negative discussion. Experiment in a positive way. U may fail but it should be purposeful.
This is all about rule of thirds. I will discuss about nose room and head room in my next post. Until then keep smiling and post your feedback's through commenting system or on Facebook page.
