The protest campaign launched by the academic, non-academic staff and the students of the Ruhuna University, demanding the removal of Vice Chancellor Prof.Sujeewa Amarasena continued for the third day yesterday.

The University Teachers Association of the university said the university witnessed the worst time under the administration of Vice-Chancellor Prof.Sujeeva Amarasena. They said that he had made colossal damage to the reputation of the university.

They said that more than 550 students have lost their studentship and another group of students have been banned from attending lectures due to the oppression unleashed by the Vice Chancellor. The association said that students are affected by operation of welfare services in an informal and illegal manner on the instruction of the Vice-Chancellor.

Subsequent to commencing the strike on November 19, Education Minister and Prime Minister Dr.Harini Amarasuriya, met with a group from the Teachers’ Federation and held a discussion about the crisis situation.

Former Secretary of the Ruhuna University Teachers’ Federation Rohan Laksiri said that the discussion with the Prime Minister had appeared to be successful and the Prime Minister had asked for a few days to study the situation and make a decision and it had been agreed upon.

He said that by delaying the removal of the Vice-Chancellor could cause a lot of damage to the system. He also said that as the allegations made are clear and can be proved, as a result there is no need for an extensive investigation to be held prior to the removal of the Vice-Chancellor. He mentioned that until the Vice-Chancellor is removed from his post subsequent to carrying out of investigations this strike will continue unabated.

Medical students of the Ruhuna University Medicine Faculty held a protest opposite the faculty in Karapitiya, demanding the immediate removal of the Vice-Chancellor yesterday afternoon (22).
