Rock Star of Writers David Sedaris at Theatre Carre

By Amsterdam City Tours

David Sedaris is one of America’s best-selling authors, humorists and renowned radio personality. This ‘rock star of writers’ is making his way across the pond to land himself on one of Amsterdam’s most famous stages – the Theatre Carre.

For one night only on 25 September, Sedaris will share his sardonic wit and incisive social critiques with an international audience. His appearance is billed an exclusive in Holland and the first time ever the Theatre Carre has hosted an author reading at its historical venue.

“Sedaris’s droll assessment of the mundane and the eccentrics who inhabit the world’s crevices make him one of the greatest humorists writing today, the Chicago Tribune writes of his work.

The great skill with which Sedaris slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves he is nothing short of a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

Sedaris has experienced great success in the US starting in the late 1990s, which quickly blossomed into a worldwide following. Today he has a total of seven million copies of his books in print, translated into 25 different languages.

Still, it wasn’t until 2010 that his works found a following in the Netherlands. Most notably, his collaboration with sister Amy Sedaris, the collection of a half-dozen plays called The Talent Family.

At Carre, he will be putting his great talents on show, reading from his latest book and some of his best selling works including Naked and Me Talk Pretty One Day. Of course, there will be no stopping Sedaris from colouring the programme with his own off the cuff comedy and signature one-liners.

Sedaris will be holding a book signing following the performance for all of his new Dutch and international fans willing to willing to weather the mobs eager for his autograph.

But spending a few extra minutes in Theatre Carre isn’t the worst thing that a visitor could do. Built in 1874 as a circus house for the famous French-German family of horse performers and circus artists, the theater has taken on a landmark status.

On its 100-year anniversary it gained the title of Royal Theatre, and now holds some of Amsterdam’s most acclaimed performances. With this exclusive appearance from David Sedaris, Theatre Carre will be holding strong to its history as one of the greatest entertainment venues in the city.
