SAN DIEGO — Fairytales bite back in “Once Upon A Time.”

The storybook drama keeps everyone guessing about the lines between fantasy and reality and Robert Carlyle’s intense portrayal of Rumplestiltskin and Mr. Gold is at the center of the mystery.

The charismatic Scottish actor best known for film such as “Trainspotting” and “The Full Monty,” graciously made time to chat up and snap pictures with press at Saturday’s media event. When he struggled to open a pen cap, he quipped: “I am the most magical man.”

“He’s such a conflicted character with such wild swings between good and evil, that it’s as if I am playing six characters at once,” says the 52-year-old. “He’s like a firework going off and now he

needs to do some bad stuff.”

A return to the dark side is also in store for Regina, who has dabbled in decency of late. How long will take her to succumb to her inner Big Bad?

“She was born to be bad,” says Lana Parrilla. “She’s evil and that’s what makes her such fun to play.”

As for the swashbuckling Hook, dishy actor Colin O’Donoghue teased that the future may lead to some hot romance.

“He has been consumed by vengeance for so long,” says the Irish actor, “it would interesting to see what would happen if he ever let that go. Would he be able to move on? Maybe he would go on a date?”

Asked to foretell the future of Rumple’s ill-fated love affair with the Belle, the actor hints at the possibility of a happily

ever after ending.

“One thing I can tell you,” he says with a twinkle in his eye, “they will meet again and they will meet in Neverland but it will not be what you expect.”
