Richmond Take Major Honours at ‘Battle of the Lovers’

Richmond took major honors in their 117th Battle of the Lovers encounter against Mahinda which ended in a draw at Galle International Cricket Stadium yesterday .

Mahinda chasing a victory target of 164 runs were 12 for no loss in 11.3 overs when rain halted the game to end without a decision. Play was possible to only 30 minutes after tea due to bad weather and finally two Umpires Prageeth Rambukwella and Chamara de Soyza officially called of the game.

Richmond scored 174 all out in the first innings while Mahinda scored 68 for 5 wickets at close of the first day’s play and they were bowled out for 128 yesterday with 46 runs behind of the Richmond’s first innings total. Dinura Kalupahana 37 in 97 balls with 4 fours and Hiruna Mandila 39 in 96 balls with 4 fours made useful knocks for Mahinda while two Richmond leg spinners Nalaka Jayawardena and Sharon Abhishek took bowling honors with sharing seven wickets among them. Jayawardena was more economical taking 4 for 19 in 18.1 overs spell with 7 maidens while 16-year-old Abhishek finished with 3 for 38 in his 14 overs spell.

Richmond in their second innings scored 117 for 7 wickets declared in 37.3 overs. Maheesha Vethmin top scored an unbeaten 30 in 41 balls with 3 fours and a six while skipper Bhanuka Manohara scored 27 in 31 balls with a boundary. Mahinda off spinner Hiruna Mandila was the most successful bowler taking 4 for 21 in his 7.3 overs with two maidens. Richmond’s Tharinda Nirmal was named as the Player of the Match and Best Batsman while Nalaka Jayawardena named as Best Bowler.
