Rice millers have committed to supplying 200,000 kilograms of rice daily to the market through ‘Lanka Sathosa’ at a regulated price starting today (04), Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe confirmed during the parliamentary session.
The Minister stated that consumers will now be able to purchase rice at Rs. 220 per kilogram.
“During discussions with rice mill owners, they explained that an issue with the banks was preventing them from releasing their stocks to the market. Yesterday, we resolved that issue,” he explained.
Additionally, the Trade Minister announced that one million coconuts will be sold at Sathosa outlets in suburban areas at Rs. 130 per coconut over the next two weeks.
He further noted that coconut products sourced from government-owned plantations would also be offered at reduced prices in this manner.
