by MaxFULL ARTICLEChris Hemsworth is fantastic in the first film adaptation of Thor. Marvel Comics has unleashed Thor onto the world and the film is a worthy origin story for the God of Thunder. Director Kenneth Branagh uses his Shakespeare experience to craft a story of love and betrayal in this comic inspired world of Asgard.
The King of Asgard, Odin, wants one of his two sons to ascend to the throne. Throughout the years, Thor proves himself worthy and his coronation is all that follows. This is foiled by enemies of Asgard attacking during the ceremony. Thor, in his pompous and conceded way, decide to in-act revenge against the enemy. Essentially ending a truce between the two species, Thor brings dishonor to Asgard and is exiled to Earth. Thor’s brother. Loki, uses this time to seize the throne and prove his worthiness to his father.
Thor’s ultimate success weighs on the shoulders of Chris Hemsworth and he was up to the task. He captures the essence of Thor perfectly giving the same depth to the role that Robert Downey Jr. brought Iron Man. Natalie Portman was cast opposite Thor as Jane Foster. Portman has been over exposed in the past few months leading to some fatigue seeing her featured here. Nevertheless, she does what she can with the Jane character and plays well off Hemsworth’s Thor. Another big surprise, was just how well Tom Hiddleston comes off as Thor’s brother, Loki. Loki is a tragic figure who was only ever given false hope to rule Asgard. Hiddleston matches Hemsworth’s intensity and it will be exciting to see where he is featured next.
Thor bounces back and forth between Asgard and Earth throughout its runtime. Thor is outlandish when it comes to his first visit to Earth and these scenes are easily the comedic highlight. It’s easy to believe a foreigner would have lot’s of trouble with his new surroundings, but it’s still great fun. These scenes are in contrast to the scenes on Asgard. Asgard is a CGI paradise, full with elaborate attire and mythical ice demons. In two instances, Thor must battle the enemy on Earth, but the epic battles take place in Asgard.
Thor easily paves the way for more adventures with the God of Thunder. At the end of the picture, we are offered a glimpse into the storyline for The Avengers, the giant collaborative piece the Marvel pictures are working towards. Hopefully each character is given their own chance to shine because Chris Hemsworth as Thor will definitely be a highlight. Thor has some problems with the story setup and typical summer-fare gags, but it is one of the better comic book origin stories.
