Review: The Shining by Stephen King

By Girllostinabook
Description (from cover):
'Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing.
But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.'
My thoughts:
My friend started reading this book and I was curious as I have been for quite some time about Stephen King. I have recently become engrossed in the horror genre and of course we all know Stephen King is about the king of horror writing. So I decided to check out this book. I am glad that I read it. I will offer some advice about reading these types of books late at night: don't do it unless you enjoy being spooked. I was reading this book about 11:30 at night and got to one of the scary bits and it creeped me out a little, but still this book was a page turner.
Right from the beginning, I was hooked. Stephen King does have a mesmerizing way with words and plots. I simply couldn't stop. Yeah, there is some cussing and vulgar language that did bother me a little, but other than that, I found this book to be quite the thrill ride. Nothing like a spooky elevator operating all by itself and a lot of ghosts to keep this new horror reader amused. I will be investigating this author more and have a lot of recommendations from co-workers and friends about which book to read next. I liked the fact that I tried something a little different from my normal reading material and I enjoyed it.
If you like something a little spooky and something that takes you on a thrill ride, then this is definitely something you might want to discover. This book is pretty popular with the author's fame and with the movie that was based on this book, but it still is a pretty good read. I will say that the language bothered me a little and the thing where you are inside the characters' head was a little confusing, but otherwise a good read that kept me up late trying to see how it ended.
