Review: The Rum Shack, 657–659 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, G41 2AB

By Emma @glasgowfoodie

Taking over a wee old mans’ pub in Govanhill and creating a Caribbean vibe sounds like a tall order, but I think The Rum Shack have done it.  It’s not all palm trees and blow up bananas though (thankfully!).

With reggae playing in the background, it’s £2.50 for rum and coke to accompany lunch or dinner served from their Caribbean-inspired menu.

Not just rum!

We struggled to pick dishes, they all sounded so good – goat curry, spicy fish, all sounded delicious.

Popcorn Prawns £6.50

Good sized prawns with lip-smacking batter and dipping sauce, a wee bit steep in price for me though.

Accra (salt fish) £5.00

Salt fish shaped and fried, an excellent bar snack.

1/4 Jerk Chicken £8

We both went for 1/4 jerk chicken served with rice and peas as well as salad and corn on the cob.  There is also a 1/2 chicken size available.  Charcoaly, spicy and lots of meat to pull off the bone.  Like Nando’s only much better. Myself and Miss D loved it.

Tidy toilets, friendly staff, good spirit and beer selection – all good stuff. Will have to come back at night for one of their music nights.

TL;DR

+ food
+ rum
– pricy starters
