The Plough at Huddlesford is hidden away deep in the South Staffordshire countryside near Lichfield. I came across it when trying to discover via good old Google some more places to try out near home. This one came up and I wasn’t expecting too much but then I looked at the menu online and it looked interesting. And thats not something that often happens anymore I’m afraid so I was intrigued.
So, off we toddled one lunchtime and this is what we found. A cosy interior, a few nods to trying to modernise with the ‘wallart’. Not entirely my cup of tea but decent none the less. I did like the cupboard chock full of stokes condiments and local producer Pips Hot Sauce on the tables. I also liked the bar with trays of sandwiches in brown paper bags to take away alongside several homemade cakes on stands.
There was a good choice of lagers and ales for Lee and a good selection of other drinks too. We noticed they were hosting a beer festival in a few weeks so that might be one to look out for.
Food wise Lee started with the Soup of the Day – Summer Vegetable Minestrone which he enjoyed. He found it a little under seasoned but no complaints apart from that. I chose Crispy Pork Tacos with Apple Slaw. The pork seemed like pulled pork that had been fried which was decent but not outstanding and I enjoyed the starter overall although the flavours lacked a bit of punch. I remedied this by pouring over a decent whack of Pips Hot Sauce!
For mains I went for the Buttermilk Chicken, Maple Bacon Peanut Butter & Pickles. The burger was actually really great – with juicy tender chicken, sweet crunch bacon and sharp pickled onions chillies and gherkin. The slaw was light and fresh and went really well. Peanut butter on a burger, well the jury’s still out on this a little. Lee went for something a little more unusual in the Packington Porchetta with Saute new potatoes spinach and red onion. The sauce on this imparticualr was great – glossy and just thick enough and with great depth of flavor. Thumbs up.
Desserts for me didn’t quite hit the spot as much as the savoury courses, although Lee seemed like a kid in a sweet shop with his Cookies and Cream Sundae. I guess you can;t go wring with ice cream gooey cookies and chocolate sauce. I had the Pecan Pie which had a good flavor but I found quite cloying.
Overall we had a really nice meal, and although there was little nitpicks here and there, we certainly will be keen to head back over and try it out again.
