Review: The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

As you guys know, I am a HUGE Kim Derting fan! I read this book a while back but I was waiting for just the right time to tell you guys about it. Tomorrow I will be featuring a review as part of the tour for book two in this series, The Essence, which was released on the first. Just in case you haven't had a chance to check out this amazing series yet, here's what I thought of book one!

Review

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of dystopian. I'm not sure why, it's just not a genre I prefer. The only other series I've read in the genre is The Hunger Games (of course) and I only really enjoyed the first book. So to be honest, I was hesitant about this book. But being one of Kim's biggest fan, I gave it a try anyway simply because she's amazing. And she pulled through with this book completely. 

I LOVE this cover! Charlie's class basically has to hide in the shadows and do what they're told, so this photo portrays that very well. I like the model choice, the little amount of detail and the dark aura surrounding it. It's just a beautiful picture all around, and you guys know me, I much prefer an artistic design to a person on a book cover. But this one was very well done. 

I'd have to say that my favorite character is Brooklyn. Sarcastic and bad ass are my two favorite qualities in my fictional characters and she radiates with both of them. I wasn't really into the relationship between Charlie and the mysterious guy she meets but romance is never one of my top priorities anyway so it worked out for me. 

Being that I don't read dystopian, I didn't have much to compare it to other than the Hunger Games, and it's nothing like that. I enjoyed the world building a lot more in this book though, that's for sure. Charlie being able to understand each of the languages was very clever, and the way the queen is chosen was something I hadn't heard of before in another novel. This book would make a phenomenal movie! I loved it, I'd read it again, and I can't wait to tell you about book two tomorrow!
