Review: The Fighting Cocks, Moseley

By Thefoodiecoupleblog

Since we live in the north of the city, we don’t often get to explore areas like Moseley as much as we should. We have visited the Fighting Cocks before a few years ago with friends, but I didn’t really remember much about it. So when we were kindly invited down to take a look at the new menu we were keen to see what this old pub had to offer.

The inside, which has been refurbished in the last year really captured my heart. Full of dark woods, leather banquettes and chairs in a warm plum and forest green with hanging lights, I really liked it’s eclectic style.

We sat in one of the tables right next to the roaring fire. Given it was a stormy day outside, this was very welcome!

They couldn’t have been more welcoming to Imogen either, bring over a bucket of toys and colouring materials. As you can see, she was well entertained!

So on to the food. I liked the look of the small main menu available for lunch – it was well rounded with lots of great options. They also have a separate sandwich menu and brunch menu too.  I ordered the Chicken Wings to start with an Asian Slaw and BBQ glaze. The wings them selves were spot on in terms of a lovely crispy skin and most chicken, a bit more of a dressing on the slaw would have made it a 10/10 dish.

Lee went for the Soup of the Day, which was Pea & Mint.  This was well seasoned and didn’t disappoint at all. I rarely order soup when out, but Lee does often so is quite picky and he really enjoyed it.

Lee went for a 21 day ages Sirloin for his main (men are so predictable  aren’t they, well this one is at least!) which was served with triple cooked chips and a mini yorkshire pud filled with caramelised onions. Well cooked steak, excellent chips and sweet onions made for a great dish,  with only the peppercorn sauce being  little bit under par.

My main course was an absolute cracker of a dish –  I can’t rave about it enough. Confit duck leg with beluga lentils, creamy mash & cavolo nero with a red wine sauce. Everything about this dish was well cooked and the sauce was just fantastic – glossy and rich, I almost licked the plate.

They also have a kids menu, from which Imogen enjoyed her spaghetti and meatballs. Although our service was a touch on the slow side, it was a very busy Saturday so can forgive them this, and I would also say that I think the food here is good value for money, with the above duck dish £12.50 and the steak only £14.00. I can honestly say if I lived a little closer I think visits here would be a regular occurrence!

Thanks to The Fighting Cocks for the invite to try the new menu, our meal was complimentary in return for our honest review.
