This week The Edgbaston announced it is ceasing its ‘fine dining’ food aspect only 6months or so and going down a more casual route instead with sharing plates, signature hot-dogs and burgers. This made me a little sad as I loved the food when we visited in May, but none the less am intrigued and excited to see what the new chef is going to bring to the table. But, regardless of any of the food issues, what’s important not to forget is that The Edgbaston first and foremost is a boutique hotel and cocktail bar. We’ve already told you all about the cocktails, so todays review is of the hotel itself.
The hotel is impressive from the front, discrete yet elegant. Our welcome was friendly and check in swift. We had parked out on the road and the staff took our keys to park for us in the private off road car park. We were shown to our room on the top floor, a couple of flightsof steep stairs wouldn’t make it very tipsy Roz friendly though as we would find out later that night! The room itself I found excellent. It was large and spacious although a bit hot – something soon remedied by an open window and a fan, which was already provided in the room. The look was sleek and elegant, a lot of blacks greys and mirrored surfaces.
The bed was a large double, complete with choice of hard and soft spare pillows – a nice touch. A separate desk with coffee making facilities, sitting area complete with local glossy magazine and a dressing table and stool with high quality hair drier were all impressive.
A well stocked mini bar and impressive selection of snacks to cover all tastes and preferences was also a plus. I mean who doesn’t get midnight cravings for pickled onion monster munch?!
Then we move on to the bathroom. Well this was a little unusual in that it was kind of split into three parts. There was a room with a toilet and basin, a separate door into a small wet room that contained a rainfall shower and then a lovely freestanding bath in the main bedroom itself, a meter or so from the foot of the bed. All bathroom areas were complete with Elemis products, which I loved. A large flat screen TV, complete with SKY Sports viewable from both the bed AND the bath was perfect for Lee not to miss Steven Gerrards final ever home game for Liverpool FC!
We both slept really well and couldn’t wait to check out breakfast. The Edgbaston include a continental spread for breakfast in the price of the room but if you want hot food you have to pay extra. Choices include the usual suspects of a full English, Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Eggs etc.. We stuck to the continental, enjoying some some lovely pots of yoghurt and fruit pureé, fresh fruit, meats, cheeses and pastries.
I couldn’t really fault the room at the Edgbaston, and would recommend to people looking for a stylish hotel break in Birmingham. Our room cost £145/night.
Disclosure: We paid in full for the room
