Review: Do Or Diner by Christine Wenger

By Girllostinabook
Description (from cover):
'When Trixie Matkowski agrees to take over her aunt's diner, she pictures lakeside views and delicious comfort food in the small town where she spent summers as a child. But the sweet scene turns sour when someone puts murder on the menu...
Trixie is in need of a fresh start away from her cheating ex-husband, but she may be biting off more than she can chew when she moves to up-state New York to run her family's famed Silver Bullet Diner. Not only is she caught off guard by the small town's resident heartthrob, Deputy Ty Brisco, but her first health inspection turns into a nightmare...when the inspector keels over into his blue plate special.
Someone made a deadly addition to an old family recipe, and Trixie is determined to find out whodunnit. But between serving up orders and sniffing out clues, she'd better watch her back--or her next meal might be her last.'
My thoughts:
I wasn't overly impressed all the much by this one. It does have a cute set-up but it just seemed to be the cliche-type of cozy mystery The love interest is the local cop, the main character is trying to move on from a difficult past, small town setting. Nothing really makes this book pop and stand out from amongst the many of other books similar. I don't know. I just get kind of a hohum-type of feeling when I think about this book. I read it and quite frankly, I think it's an unforgettable read.
I always feel bad about saying stuff like that because I imagine all the hard work, the effort and the dedication that goes into writing a book. But I can't help but be honest. That's why you read this blog isn't it? For honest takes on the books I read and how I view them. I wish that I could say that this book was a great debut to a new mystery series, but it was just mediocre. Nothing stands out, nothing makes this book remarkable and nothing will make me remember it tomorrow. To be honest, I set the bar really high with my cozy mystery standards because I read a lot in this genre. I expect a lot because there are the rare few gems that really make me say wow.
If you like the cozy mystery culinary-themed books, then this book might be more up your alley than it was for me. I just feel that the culinary themed mysteries are just overly done and it's just not really my thing. Of course, I tend to read a lot of the new debut mystery series because I like to keep it fresh and find new series to love all the time. This book just didn't meet my standards, but just because I didn't enjoy it, doesn't necessarily mean that it won't appeal to you.
