It must be a total coincidence that the advert came on television the night before this book arrived. Jordanna turned round and said "Mum that looks good, can I have it?" And as if by magic, there it was the very next day.
Tina is a triplet, but she's always been the odd one out. Her sisters Phil and Maddie are bigger and stronger and better at just about everything. Luckily, they look after teeny-tiny Tina wherever they go - but when the girls start in scary, super-strict Miss Lovejoy's class, they're split up, and Tina has to fend for herself for the first time.
Tina is horrified when she's paired up with angry bully Selma, who nobody wants to be friends with. But when Miss Lovejoy asks them to help her create a butterfly garden in the school playground, Tina discovers she doesn't always need her sisters - and that there's a lot more to Selma than first meets the eye.
I never like giving too much of the story away with book reviews. It's best for the reader to read it themselves and see if it's for them. But here goes a little taster from what me and Jordnna have read.
Tina is a triplet with her sisters Phil and Maddie. However Tina is much smaller as she was born with a heart condition and has to endure various operations. Being small and a little different to her sisters makes her stand out, as does her health condition meaning she can't play contact sports and do other things. The book tells Tina's journey through school and childhood, her relationship with her sisters and family and big issues such as bullying. Tina gets paired up with what appears to be a rather nasty bully called Selma. However throughout the story it seems Selma is not the bully which she first appeared to be and Tina and Selma eventually end up as friends.
The Butterfly Club seems a real easy read and fine for a 7 year old. There are over 370 pages to the story but the text is fairly large print and there are lots of images throughout the book too.
The back of the book contains some fun activities including a cake recipe.
It's a perfect read for both girls and boys who may themselves feel different and out of place at school and may be experiencing issues with bullying or relationships.
Jordanna now has a new book which she is enjoying reading and I am happy as it keeps her off her tablet for a while.
