Nothing strange about this brew

Cafe Strange Brew (where Pudding Lane used to be) has settled into Shawlands so quickly that it’s already a firm favorite with locals and those from further afield.

We pulled ourselves out of bed and along to this small but popular cafe, grabbing the last two seats for brunch.

The menu sounded delicious – the baked eggs, smoked salmon cream, cheddar and toast swung it for me. For Mr Foodie the poached egg, smashed avocado, toasted sourdough with bacon and chilli hollandaise was ordered.

Whilst we waited a pot of tea and London fog was delivered.  London fog is Earl Grey tea served in hot milk, like an Earl Grey Latte.  The regular tea was a much needed strong cup of Builder’s tea. The food soon appeared…

Three eggs baked with a creamy cheddar and salmon sauce.  It was salty, but in that oh-my-gawd, this is amazing salty, I must dip my toast into this…it was a filling portion too. Bonus points for also providing Lockerbie butter.

The poached egg, toasted sourdough with smashed avocado and chilli hollandaise with added bacon was heavenly.  Fresh bread, creamy avocado and a perfectly cooked gooey egg with hollandaise that had a slight kick to it.  This is the best brunch item we’ve had for a good while. If you are visiting, you must try it!

We’re already planning on a return visit for the French toast!

Service friendly and helpful. Fast turnaround on food. Toilets not checked on this visit.

TL;DR

+ the smashed avocado toast was perfect

+ freshly cooked and quickly delivered

– get there sharp as it gets very busy
