Review – Best of British Home Nations Menu – Tron Theatre, 63 Trongate, Glasgow

By Emma @glasgowfoodie

A fine act to follow!

The Tron Theatre is more than just a theater as there’s also a licensed cafe/bar/restaurant which is often overlooked, it’s open to anyone so you don’t need to be seeing a show to eat there, and although the address listed for the Tron is 63 Trongate, the direct entrance to the cafe/bar/restaurant is from Chisholm St. There’s also some seating outside if the weather’s nice.

To coincide with the Commonwealth Games, The Tron Theatre are celebrating with their own Home Nations Festival, featuring shows from the competing home nations, and food – a Best of British Home Nations menu runs from now until the end of the Games. We popped along to try it out however the full menu (an additional 4 mains) only runs in the evening and so for lunch we shared the 4 starters that are available plus we tried all 4 desserts (at smaller sized portions so bear that in mind when you see the pics below). A regular pre-theatre menu also runs at lunch-times and in the evening.

Starters

Haggis fritter

Tron Theatre – Macsween haggis fritter

Ms Foodie isn’t normally much of a haggis fan but she was bowled over by this. This was really tasty & peppery without a hint of fat or gristle. It came with a whisky sauce and smooth delicious mash.

Cullen skink

Tron Theatre – Cullen skink

We like our Cullen skink to be thick and this was a bit thin and not as creamy as it could’ve been however it was still a tasty fishy soup and there were big chunks of smoked haddock at the bottom of the bowl. Served with Mother’s Pride plain bread, just like your gran would’ve served it!

Welsh rarebit

Tron Theatre – Welsh rarebit

So simple, and yet something we’ve not had for ages. Strong mustard cheese, topped with rocket and served with pesto, which was a bit different but worked really well.

Ham hough and Applewood cheddar croquettes

Tron Theatre – Ham hough and Applewood cheddar croquettes

The winning formula of cheese and ham combined in a ball and coated with breadcrumbs. Mmm crisp coating and not greasy at all.  Smooth and delicious cheese and chunks of ham.

Desserts

Bara Brith (Welsh fruit tea loaf)

Tron Theatre – Bara Brith (Welsh fruit tea loaf)

A fruity tea-loaf with a zingy bittersweet marmalade  ice-cream – I think the first time we’ve had that but it’s something we’d happily eat from a cone! The cake was nice but perhaps not at its freshest. It came with a drizzle of sweet toffee sauce.

Irish Cream liqueur cheesecake

Tron Theatre – Irish Cream liqueur cheesecake

Nice and creamy with a good buttery base but it was one of those really soft/hasn’t set right cheesecakes (which some people may prefer). The raspberry purée was really tart and full of raspberry flavor.

Eton Mess

Tron Theatre – Eton Mess

Strawberry, cream and meringue mixed together = one of the best summer puddings around and this was a really good version.

Macaroon

Tron Theatre – Macaroon ice-cream on a nougat wafer

Like a single nougat you’d get from the ice-cream van! The ice-cream was nice and creamy but any taste of coconut was light, it may have just been vanilla ice-cream with toasted coconut on top. It also came with a drizzle of tasty chocolate sauce.

Conclusion

This was the first time we’d eaten at the Tron and the food was to a surprisingly high-standard. All the dishes were really tasty and we scoffed the lot – we had a few minor complaints but then we’re fussy! And although we only ate starters and dessert we were still stuffed so the portions are well-sized.

Get yourself along to the Tron before 3rd August to try the food for yourself! The Best of British pre-theatre menu is priced at £11.95 for 2 courses and £14.95 for 3 courses (10% service charge on tables of 6 or more).
