“Of the various star systems that make up the Confederation, most lie thousands of light-years from First Earth-and out here, no one is free. The agencies that govern the Confederation are as corrupt as the crime bosses who patrol it, and power is held by anyone with enough greed and ruthlessness to claim it. That power is derived from one thing: metatech, the devices that allow people to travel great distances faster than the speed of light.
Jeth Seagrave and his crew of teenage mercenaries have survived in this world by stealing unsecured metatech, and they’re damn good at it. Jeth doesn’t care about the politics or the law; all he cares about is earning enough money to buy back his parents’ ship, Avalon, from his crime-boss employer and getting himself and his sister, Lizzie, the heck out of Dodge. But when Jeth finds himself in possession of information that both the crime bosses and the government are willing to kill for, he is going to have to ask himself how far he’ll go to get the freedom he’s wanted for so long.
Avalon is the perfect fit for teens new to sci-fi as well as seasoned sci-fi readers looking for more books in the YA space-and a great match for fans of Joss Whedon’s cult hit show Firefly.”
Go read this book right now! This book was just amazing. From the world building, to the characters, to the writing style, Mindee Arnett got it all. Avalon is told from a male perspective who is our main character, Jeth. This review will be brief and vague since it has SO MANY MYSTERIES and I do not want to spoil it for you all.
I really love how all of the characters in this book contributes to the story. They’re not just there just so the author can have supporting characters. I like how Jeth is so determined to get his ship (Avalon) back. I also like how he loves his family so much, and that they mean the world to him. The supporting characters are super awesome as well. Jeth’s team is so funny and I love how they treat each other like family.
I constantly found myself flipping through the book because of the world building. I love how people can travel through space, and there are these different planets where people can live in. It says on Goodreads that fans of Beth Revis’s Across the Universe trilogy (WHICH I FREAKING LOVE) will like this book, and I couldn’t agree more! If you are a big fan of Revis’s trilogy, then this book will be right up your alley.
The romance was also awesome! I love how it did not take over the plot. It was just one of the rare things you will find in this book. It is more action packed rather than having romance-y scenes.
Overall, just read this, please. There is so many plot twists and mystery that it will just blow you away. So yes, I highly recommend you reading Avalon!
