Back in September, I had the honor of being the first person to guest post for one of my favorite blogs, Disability in Kidlit, as they began a new venture in posting weekly! If you haven’t heard of them, I’d recommend checking out their site and staying a while. Whether you identify as disabled or not, Disability in Kidlit provides some awesome food for thought for authors and readers alike.
They invited me back to write another guest post this week, so I chose a topic I’m particularly passionate about: representation of disabled people in literature. Occasionally, I’ll find a hidden gem of a novel that does a great job depicting disability. More often than not though, I notice either misrepresentation or a complete lack of representation of disabilities in so much of what I read. My post explores the emotional impact of this and calls on authors to focus on best practices for portraying disability in their writing. Check it out and let me know what you think!
