Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana yesterday said that the number of dengue cases reported has been reduced this year compared to last year.

The Minister was speaking at a media conference held yesterday at the Health Promotion Bureau. “Due to the bad weather conditions that prevailed in the countrty, a large number of dengue cases were reported recently, but the Health Ministry in collaboration with relevant other parties implemented successful mosquito control programmes and also strengthened treatment services. As a result of that we could save lives of patients.” the Minister said.

The Minister further said that only 50 dengue-related deaths were reported. The disease could be suppressed for a long time by all parties working together to control the dengue mosquito.

Ministry Secretary Dr.Palitha Mahipala said that as per the World Health Organization sources, dengue is spreading rapidly throughout the world this year with the highest number of cases reported from the American region. Around five million cases and 5,000 deaths are recorded worldwide.

It is also pointed out that the main reason for this is climate change. In addition, travel and urbanization between countries can also be pointed out.
