TAKEAWAY: Newspapers and magazines globally worked on special presentations for the 10th anniversary of 9-11. We show you two that called our attention, although we are sure there are many others that excelled.
The Daily: showing what a news app can do well
With the 9-11 remembrance coverage, The Daily, the first newspaper specifically created for the tablet has turned the page and shown us what is possible to enhance storytelling in the new platform.
We are impressed by the depth of the coverage, but also how the story of 9-11 has been presented through a variety of genres, from regular narratives to audio, video and simple informational graphics that emphasize the numbers in the story.
Very special, indeed, is a video presentation of how the new construction of the Twin Towers is taking place, with the main engineer on the project walking us through the specifics of how new concrete created for the construction of the new towers is different, stronger and more resistant to impact.
There is also a 360 view of the new construction site.
Front pages with impact
Our Reed Reibstein, art director/project manager at Garcia Media, selects these good front pages that dared to be different with the way they used typography, illustration and created a “feeling” for the story.
The Virginian Pilot, USA
The Toronto Star, Canada
The Salt Lake Tribune, USA
The Star Ledger, USA
The Commercial Appeal, USA
Publico, Portugal
West Hawaii Times, USA
Bild in Germany
Frank Deville sends us these images from Bild am Sonntag in a special package about 9-11 coverage.
In Germany, Bild moved its top editorial team to New York City to present the story from its geographic source. In the Sunday newspaper, special pages were presented as well.
We show you some of those pages here. Front page opens with a headline that reads: “The day that has never ended”.
Postscript on 9-11
I know that we all have been more than saturated with stories commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9-11, and I did hesitate before posting a Monday blog on the subject. However, since the mission of this space is to bring examples of work that is well done, I did not want the examples above to go ignored. In fact, I may enhance the blog with Bild’s tablet edition of Monday, Sept. 12, which promises to be multi genre as well. We shall see.
And, finally, spending the anniversary of 9-11 while travelling abroad can be an education: you learn to keep your US passport out of view, or not displayed too prominently; and you read foreign newspapers with their take of the story. Indeed, front page coverage of the story everywhere, with essays and commentaries from London to Madrid and in between. Overall, headlines like “US: The Lost Decade” , or “Not a super power anymore? The lessons of 9-11.“ About Obama’s statement that America is stronger: Not so, says the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, adding “can we say that it is, considering its current financial situation?“. An editorial cartoon in London’s The Independent shows a tattered US flag dragged down by the letters that spell ECONOMY, and a visual reference to the fact that today’s economic crisis is the US”s new 9-11.
