Refreshing Change

The picture above shows new Representative Kyrsten Sinema (D-Arizona) being sworn in by Speaker Boehner on the first day of the 113th Congress. What may not be evident in the picture, but is certainly important, is that Rep. Sinema does not have her hand on a Bible (or any other religious book). That's because she is the only openly atheist member of the current Congress (although she has started referring to herself as "non-religious" rather than atheist). She is taking the oath of office with her hand on a copy of the United States Constitution -- which makes sense because that is the document she is swearing to uphold.
