The week between Christmas and New Year was business-as-usual for some folk in Lyon, but many of the small to medium-sized operations were shuttered for either a few days after Christmas or until the week after New Year. Plenty of tourists were milling around Vieux Lyon, while the rest of the city outside of the tourist zones was fairly quiet. Even the tourist boats that run along the city’s two rivers, Saône and Rhône, were docked that week, leaving the waters almost mirror-like in some places.
Last week we spent more time around the Saône River versus the Rhône River by virtue of where we stayed (Vaise and Croix-Rousse) and where most of the historic parts of town are located (along the Saône), so most of my photos are biased towards the Saône. The scenery along the Rhône shows more modern buildings and main roads.
Note: if you’re a jogger, speed walker, cyclist, or have an active dog, you will love the riverside paths in Lyon which offer long, uninterrupted stretches without traffic or crosswalks.
