Red-breasted Nuthatch

They are migrants or year round visitors depending on the climate. (See map below.)
Four nuthatch species occur in the U.S. and Canada (red- and white-breasted, pygmy, and brown-headed), and 28 species live around the world. World nuthatch info here, including a description and image of each species.
In California we have the red-breasted nuthatch year round, and right now I am hearing them every day. For such a little bird their voice carries far.
Sitta canadendis are only 4.5 inches (11 cm) long. They eat insects in the summer, and conifer seeds in the winter. More info here.
