Record Number of Participants for Colombo Tennis Championships

The Colombo Tennis Championship which is the oldest tennis tournament in the country got underway for the 107th time on Saturday at the SLTA (playing section) courts at Green path. The tournament has attracted a record number of participants which include the cream of tennis.

The Principal Sponsor of the tournament is the premier eye care provider Vision Care. The tournament is also supported by First Capital PLC and Nestle. According to the President of the SLTA playing section Aendra Bandaranaike, the first round matches are being conducted on Saturday while the event is more competitive with most of the experienced players taking part in this tournament. He also said “ I would like to place on record my utmost appreciation of all the sponsors especially Vision Care for coming forward as our Principal Sponsor, First Capital, and Nestle, and others who wish to remain anonymous”

The events ranging from juniors (Boys/ Girls- under 12 to 18) to Men’s, Women’s, and Veterans (for over 35, 45, 55, and 65) are being held, allowing every segment of the tennis-playing community to participate.

Meanwhile, Janaka Fernando Managing Director of Vision Care the principal sponsor of the tournament said “we are very happy to be involved with this prestigious tournament for the 7th year running” We believe sports are vital for the health of the nation and are strongly committed to supporting the Colombo Championships.

The objective of the tournament is in line with our corporate objectives and as such we want to be part of this wonderful event.

Last time Thehan Wijemanne emerged the men’s singles title and once again he will battle for the title. The organisers have a busy schedule during the next two weeks to conduct the Colombo Championship.
