Real-Life C-3PO: IBM’s New AI Computer Can Argue Like a Human

In this demo, The Debater was asked to provide arguments for the statement – “The sale of violent videogames to minors should be banned.” After scanning over 4 million Wikipedia articles, The Debater started providing both negative and positive arguements for the statement, within just 45 seconds. Which goes way beyond than IBM’s Watson supercomputer, which showed great potential at a “Jeopardy” quiz show back in 2011.

The Debater’s ability to make accurate assessments within seconds is truly remarkable. Although, we don’t have to worry about these robot taking over the world (yet) because IBM’s director of research, John Kelly III assures that “It’s not man versus machine,” but “It’s man and machine reasoning together.”

The Debater is still in research stage and has a long way to go before it gets flesh and bones. Hopefully it will be much friendlier and look better than Luke Skywalker’s annoying friend C-3PO. Even though the two have distinct capabilities, I wouldn’t imagine The Debater to be any less annoying than the gold-plated robot.
