Reading the ABCs from Nature

By Maliasa

Nature is filled with patterns and with a bit of imagination you can find all sort of interesting shapes. Like the letters of the alphabet.

Wonderful images of letter like structures have been collected from space. Clouds phytoplankton blooms, and dust clouds! If you look at things carefully there are many shapes reminiscent of letters.

A is for an astronaut who captured the photograph above from the international space station.

The letter Y can be seen if you look at the colourful photo below of Namibia's Ugab River

You can see the whole alphabet here.

So next time you go out see if you can find any letters. Look at the shape of stones, leaves, or patterns in the frost. You can also raise your eyes from the ground and look at the hidden pattern of dancing insects or birds.

Can you trace with your eyes they way they are flying. What pattern do they make. Do the birds make anything the resembles a letter?

Dennis Hlynsky creates videos at the intersection of art and science. Here he has transformed ordinary footage of birds and insects into ethereal illustrations. Simply magical!
