…Reach the End

“Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ brings an end to the Twilight Saga film series.

It’s hard to critique this individual film without commenting on the series as a whole, but I will do my best (otherwise this review would go on for far too long).

The decision to cut the final book into two movies was not a great one, but Director Bill Condon has done what he could with what was left of a weak story.

In this, the final installment.  After four films of whining and moping, Bella (Kristen Stewart) is finally a vampire.  After her near-death childbirth experience in Part 1, Bella has become immortal and, it would seem, has her happily ever after.  Unfortunately, her newborn daughter with a bit of a growth-spurt  Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy) is mistaken as an immortal child, a big “no-no” in the eyes of the Volturi (think Vampire Vatican).  This sets the Cullen clan off on a quest to prove Renesmee’s mortality and save their coven from the Volturi’s wrath.

If that sounds exciting, then I must have written it incorrectly.  Nearly two hours of discussion about gathering witnesses to testify on behalf of Renesmee and preaching about a non-violence (important, but boring) nearly puts you to sleep.  The film finally picks up with a battle scene that will have Twi-hards running to fact check their books, but was a good addition.

There are some cute moments in between the beginning and this final scene, such as when Bella misjudges her vampire strength and tries to appear human, but these moments are few and far between.  For the most part the film drags with dull dialog and over explanation.

It’s as a good an ending as could have been managed, but a bit of a let down considering all the hype around this series.
