the first thing I thought of is that it sounds like the Iron Dome - using multi million dollar missiles to knock down Kassam rockets that are made of pipes that are worth supposedly about $15, but it isn't really a good comparison. The rudimentary Kassam rockets, even though they are cheap can cause a lot of damage and kill people. the mosquito is a minor problem and is small and difficult to hit out of mid air and a cannon ball is big and unwieldy and not very flexible in tracking down the mosquito.
