Hi! I’m an avid (but silent) reader of your blog! I noticed you changed from curly to straight hair recently. I loved the new ‘do, btw! But I’m just wondering what products did you use when you were still curly? I have a hard time managing mine! Thanks a lot! - Mel
Hi Mel! Thanks for sending in your question and complimenting my new hairstyle. I feel you on the “hard time managing” curly hair! I never truly embraced my natural curly hair until I had it cold wave permed and lived with curly hair for a few months. Little did I know it would be much harder to manage than rebonded hair! I always have this buhaghag-frizz-hair-days phobia! My hairstylist recommended budget-friendly hair products and lectured me on how to use them properly.
First of all, she advised me to use deep conditioning products such as the TRESemme for dry, frizz prone hair. Since my hair always undergoes chemical treatment, it was understandably severely dry and damaged. Wait for 5 minutes (or finish at least 2 songs on your playlist if you listen to music while showering like I do) before rinsing. I use this everyday instead of regular conditioner.
After washing my hair, I let it air dry for a few minutes and when it’s 70% dry, I divide my hair into two to three sections and apply generously the Vitress Hair Cuticle Coat on each part. This locks in moisture and to make my hair silky soft.
Lastly, to hold the curls, I use Finesse Curl Defining Mousse. I noticed that when I skip applying this, my curls look untamed and seemed lifeless. Dispense a generous amount on your palm and rub hands together before applying mid-lengths to ends. Scrunch your hair (imagine crumpling a paper, but do this on your hair… gently, okay?) so curls will be more defined.
And because I have thick, unruly hair, I usually style it by clipping half of my hair, like in my picture above.
That’s it! I hope I answered your question! Send in your other inquiries via my Tumblr Ask Box or via email (hazelnot AT yahoo DOT com). It makes me happy answering blog readers’ questions! :)
