"Who is the greatest English poet?
I know, I know, the answer would obviously be William Shakespeare. However it has been argued that the strongest contender to be the second greatest is John Milton. 2008 was the 400th anniversary of Milton’s birth and many came out to argue for the strength of his work (including the amusing picture above of Milton as a poetic Super-Man!).
If you are feeling in the mood for poetry this weekend then you are spoilt for choice. Lance Pierson will be leading a walk along the banks of the Thames on Saturday and unearthing all sorts of interesting poetic landmarks involving poets such as Burns, Donne, Wordsworth and Shakespeare himself. Then on Bank Holiday Monday Pierson leads a walk around the City to see where Milton lived and worked. On both walks Pierson, a professional actor, reads aloud the poems connected with the place."
