Note: An entry examination will be administered to establish an eligibility list for Public Safety Dispatcher in order to fill current and future vacancies in our combined Police/Fire Dispatch Center. Candidates who successfully complete the examination process will be eligible for consideration.
DUTIES AND WORK REQUIREMENTS:
This is responsible dispatching work with special emphasis on contact with the general public. Receives and dispatches radio transmissions over communications network and operates a variety of specialized communications equipment. Receives calls for information and emergency services (police, fire and EMS services). Maintains all records relating to communications system and performs related assignments as required. Works independently or under general supervision. Must be physically capable of performing essential functions of this position.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
High school graduate or equivalent. Excellent listening and comprehension skills. Clear, calm voice and manner of speaking, plus tact and courtesy. Ability to follow complex directions. Ability to work efficiently in confined quarters, and in stressful and emergency situations. Ability to maintain records, files, logs, etc. Proficiency in typing desirable. Previous experience and/or training in the operation of personal computers highly desirable.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The salary range is $23.89/hr. ($49,691/yr.) to $31.45/hr. ($65,416/yr.); entry rate dependent upon applicant’s related experience, knowledge and abilities. Excellent benefits.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process will consist of a job-simulation audio-based assessment that measures the critical dispatch skills of listening comprehension, problem solving, multitasking and maintaining composure under stress as required in a typical dispatch setting.
Top candidates will be asked to participate in subsequent phases which include:
- Extensive Background check
- Personal interview
- Polygraph
- Psychological Assessment
- Medical examination and drug screen
- Executive interview
Note: Any information of a criminal or illegal nature which surfaces during this process will be forwarded to the appropriate enforcement investigative agency.
Inability to successfully complete any phase of this process, or failure to appear for any phase, may be cause for elimination from consideration.
EXAMINATION INFORMATION:
The examination will be given on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 9:00 am. Examination administration time is approximately 2 hours. The examination will be administered in the Nelson Conference Center at Kettering Medical Center, 3535 Southern Boulevard, Kettering, OH 45429. No changes in assigned times will be made; no alternate exam dates will be arranged. All applicants must have an application and exam reservation on file with the City by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2017, in order to take part in this examination. All applicants must bring a photo I.D. (preferably a valid driver’s license) to the exam site.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY DISPATCHER CANDIDATES
As a potential candidate for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher, it is important that you are aware of the following information regarding the duties required of a dispatcher. Candidates should note that:
1. Extensive background checks will be conducted prior to appointment to the position.
2. Prior to appointment, all candidates will be required to participate in a polygraph examination and a psychological assessment.
3. Successful completion of an on-board training period will be required of all dispatchers after appointment to the position.
4. Dispatchers must be available for assignment to any shifts covering the 24-hour period of operation, including days, evenings, holidays, and weekends. May be required to work hours in addition to a normal shift.
5. Once appointed, dispatchers will be required to conform with established departmental dress codes.
6. Dispatchers must exhibit the ability to remain calm in emergency situations, deal pleasantly with irate and emotional callers, and maintain efficient operations at all times.
