Princess Michael of Kent, who received major criticism for wearing a blackamoor brooch in front of Meghan Markle is now saying she’s sorry. The Princess wore the brooch during the Queen’s Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace Wednesday.

“The brooch was a gift and has been worn many times before,” a representative for Princess Michael said in a statement to People. “Princess Michael is very sorry and distressed that it has caused offense.”

Here is the back story:

The blackamoor jewelry use to be popular back in the 18th century.  The jewelry is now considered to be racially insensitive, because it depicts a black woman as a servant.

So, when Princess Michael was seen wearing the brooch, on the SAME day she was to meet Meghan Markle for the first time, social media called her out for it.

Here is the Princess wearing the brooch as she arrives to Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s lunch.

Since Meghan Markle’s mother is an African American woman, social media felt the Princess wearing the brooch was inappropriate.

This isn’t the first time the Princess has been accused of racism either.

Back in 2004 it was reported that while she was at a restaurant in New York that she told African American diners to  “go back to the colonies.”
