School Reunion Preparation Tips!
Sometime in December, I thought I’d check my ‘others’ message folder in Facebook. It was a random decision and not something that I do often at all. Very rarely in fact, as I mostly forget that it’s there, assuming it to be full of crap from scammers and spammers.
BUT to my huge surprise there was a note there from a primary school pal, someone I had not seen in well over 3o (cough) years! Blow me down!
As you can see by my Year 1 photo above, I began school in 1974 and yep, that’s a long, long, long time ago. Yeronga, our suburban Brisbane stomping ground, was in 1974 a fairly close knit community and most families knew the ins-and-outs of neighbours and other residents of the area. My Mum and Dad remembered this schoolmate well, and his family, and so contact was made and discussions started around the organisation of a school reunion.
Our class of mates traveled through the 7 years of primary school with very few changes. Some kids left, some newbies arrived but many of the core group pictured here finished at Yeronga State School in 1980, still together in the same class. From there, it was high school and we scattered across a number of different high schools around Brisbane.
Margo, my friend from kindergarten (even before this photo in 1974) is still very much part of my life today. We’re stuck with each other. The others though, well it’s been decades. Until now.
On the 11th of January, there is our own little school reunion. From that photo – with thanks to Facebook, the White Pages, and some parents who continue to live in the same house years on – we have tracked down 12 eager-beavers for dinner. I’m actually really excited and can’t wait. Not at all nervous ….. like I have been with the previous High School Reunions I’ve attended.
I’m in close contact with Margo on this one, as we’ll be traveling it together, and so in readieness to see some of the kids I’ve not seen in 30+ years, here’s how I’m preparing for this School Reunion …
- only ONE glass of champagne with Margo before heading to the restaurant and then upon arrival I’ve made an undertaking to be very sensible in my consumption of refreshments
- there is not enough time between now and then to rid the body of unwanted kilograms SO a floaty maxi dress will be the order of the day! Besides, while some of us girls may be wearing more weight, some of the fellows may be wearing less hair!
- I’m wracking my brain to think of at least 5 hilarious primary school anecdotes that can be regaled when conversation re-starters may be needed.
- Niko pen and sticky name labels in the handbag, just in case it’s not all that easy
- iphone at the ready for – contact updates, instagram snaps, facebook accounts etc
- under no circumstances order anything to eat which may require the use of fingers, or be covered in rich dark sauce or be unpronounceable on the menu
So the above are just the rules of thumb I’ve pondered to date. In my excitement, that is.
Do you have any tips to add for approaching a dinner for 12 with school friends you may not have seen for at least 3 decades?
